Intel has announced the commercialization of its first 11th generation Intel Core Tiger Lake-U chip that reaches a speed of 5GHz and is developed to be part of the configurations of portable computers.
The announcement
coincides with the celebration of Computex 2021 , a
highly relevant event that takes place annually in the middle of the year and
is being held in virtual format for the second consecutive year.
In fact, the new chip
has Intel Iris Xe graphics, Intel wifi 6 / 6E (Gig +), as well as Intel 5G
5000, which also guarantees 5G connectivity thanks to the module it
incorporates.
Specifically, Intel
has announced two new processors, the 2.9 GHz Core i7-1195G7 and the 2.5 GHz
Core i5-1155G7. After powering the i7-1195G7 with Intel's Turbo Boost Max 3.0
technology, the chip allows to achieve a clock speed of 5 GHz.
Both chips belong to
what Intel calls its "UP3" category, what was previously known as the
"U" series of chips designed for general-purpose notebooks. Intel
said more than 60 designs based on the Intel Core i7-1195G7 and Intel Core i5-1155G7
are expected heading into the second half of the year.
Among the main laptop manufacturers are brands such as Acer, HP, Lenovo, Asus or MSI available, which will have models even for this summer. Nearly 250 designs powered by 11th generation Intel Core U-series processors are expected.
With the new
additions, the number of Intel Tiger Lake-H UP3 chips rises to a total of seven
to choose from, in addition to the five that Intel launched last year in
September.
In our review of the
first Tiger Lake chips for laptops, we already discovered how Intel competes in
performance with AMD's Ryzen 4000 mobile processors. In part, that's due
to the chip's SuperFIN transistor design, which offers significant performance
improvements.
In the section on
computer configurations for gaming laptops, Intel has also launched two
variants: the so-called "Tiger Lake H35" chip for ultraportable
gaming PCs, and the 11th generation Tiger Lake-H cores for more traditional
laptops.
In the following table you can see how the new family of Intel Tiger Lake chips for laptops is formed, with the new models highlighted in red:
Performance improves
Intel throws out a
number of performance graphs over previous generations, providing some new
benchmarks. This is how you see the new Core i7-1195G7 adapting to the
competition, the Ryzen 7 5800U.
However, it is important to note that the Intel chip runs between 28W and 35W, while the Ryzen runs between 15W and 25W. More power generally equates to higher performance.
Both in the games section and when it comes to generating content, the new processors will benefit from controller optimizations, as well as the overall design and speed of the processor itself.
5G connectivity as standard
At the platform
level, Intel has decided to announce its first 5G solution at Computex. The
M.2 5G Solution 5000 card includes software designed by Intel to work with the
rest of the 6E wifi chipset.
The pandemic has
given some truce in the adoption of 5G, however, with many companies trying to
get their workers back to normal, it seems that connectivity in devices and
equipment will become crucial for 2022.
